Andreas Kümmert may be best known in Germany for a few seconds of live television — but the blues and soul in his voice were there long before any TV camera caught it. He was born on 20 July 1986 in the Gemünden am Main area of Lower Franconia (some sources cite Lohr am Main as his birthplace; SlowBlues follows the most widely used source, English Wikipedia and MusicBrainz) (Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andreas_Kümmert; de.wikipedia.org). His father, a trumpet player with a large blues, rock and jazz record collection, brought music into the house early — Andreas started on drums at age nine and taught himself guitar at thirteen (Source: laut.de). As a teenager he played in punk and grunge bands before self-releasing three solo albums from 2007 onward (Source: laut.de). His big breakthrough came in December 2013, when he won season 3 of "The Voice of Germany" with his own song "Simple Man," which reached number two on the German singles chart (Source: English Wikipedia, "The Voice of Germany season 3"). In March 2015 he won the German Eurovision selection with "Heart of Stone" — but took the microphone on stage and said, "I'm not really in the right shape to accept this. I give my title to Ann Sophie," withdrawing from representing Germany (Source: Euronews, 6 March 2015). He later explained the decision was connected to an anxiety disorder he has been open about (Source: de.wikipedia.org). In 2016 he released the covers album "Heart & Soul" together with guitarist Siggi Schwarz and Hamburg Blues Award winner Jessy Martens, reworking blues and soul classics such as "When a Man Loves a Woman" — one of the clearest blues statements in his catalogue (Source: siggi-schwarz.de). After his Universal deal ended he started his own label, Vomit Records, and in 2023 formed a new trio with bassist/producer Stefan Kahne and drummer Michael Germer for the album "Working Class Hero," on which he also re-recorded his old "Rocket Man" cover (Source: classicrock.net). That same summer he opened for Beth Hart on her German tour (Source: concert listings). Today he tours with the band Andreas Kümmert & The Electric Circus, and in August 2026 he closed the Scherenburg-Festspiele festival in his hometown of Gemünden am Main (Source: Main-Echo, 17 August 2026).

Musical Influence

Andreas Kümmert's significance in the German blues scene has less to do with chart positions and more to do with using a television-won platform — one most blues artists never get — to deliberately pull blues and soul into the German mainstream. The covers album "Heart & Soul" (2016) with Siggi Schwarz and Jessy Martens showed a whole generation of TV viewers that the voice that won "The Voice of Germany" actually belonged to the blues and soul tradition (Source: siggi-schwarz.de). His openness about his anxiety disorder, especially in connection with declining to represent Germany at Eurovision in 2015, has also made him a rare public voice for mental health within the German music industry (Source: de.wikipedia.org).

Formative experiences

  • •Grew up with his father's large blues, rock and jazz record collection — his trumpet-playing father sparked his musical interest early on (Source: laut.de).

  • •Played in punk and grunge bands as a teenager before self-releasing three solo albums from 2007 onward (Source: laut.de).
  • •Won 'The Voice of Germany' in December 2013 with a blind audition of Elton John's 'Rocket Man' — a song he would re-record a decade later for the album 'Working Class Hero' (Source: English Wikipedia, 'The Voice of Germany season 3').
