Angelo Rossi, known by his stage name "Leadbelly" — taken from American blues and folk legend Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter — is one of Italy's foremost interpreters of acoustic and country blues (Source: Wikipedia; Blues.gr). Born 3 March 1954 in Ancona and based around Cardano al Campo in Lombardy, he worked as a dance-hall musician and rock DJ from 1967 to 1983 before returning to acoustic and electric blues guitar (Source: Wikipedia). His solo performances — built around acoustic and electric guitar, harmonica and kazoo — draw on Delta blues tradition, interspersed with humor and first-hand references to time spent in Mississippi (Source: Wikipedia). In the late 1980s he worked extensively with American blues musician Larry Johnson, performing frequently in the United States (Source: Wikipedia). He released the self-produced "Devil or Angel" in 1985, "Jump Up Songs" on Il Popolo del Blues in 2001, and "I Don't Want to Take Nothing With Me When I'm Gone" in 2006 — an album later described as a watershed moment for Italian blues (Source: Bloos Records; Rootshighway.it). In 2012 he recorded "Never Mind Revolution" with the project Nerves & Muscles, alongside Max Prandi and Tiziano Galli (Source: Bloos Records). His most recent studio album, "It Don't Always Matter How Good You Play" (2023, Bloos Records), was recorded in January 2021 at Giambona Lab studios in Livorno with guitarist Roberto Luti, bassist Simone Luti and drummer Enrico Cecconi (Source: Rootshighway.it; Il Blues Magazine). Rossi remains a regular fixture on the Italian festival circuit, often performing alongside harmonica player Marco Pandolfi, and continues to tour in 2026 as "Angelo 'Leadbelly' Rossi & the Most Valuable Players," including a May 2026 date at Spirit de Milan (Source: Mentelocale).

Musical Influence

As one of Italy's leading solo acoustic/Delta blues performers for over four decades, Rossi has helped keep country blues traditions alive on the Italian circuit and mentored the next generation through regular collaborations with younger players like Marco Pandolfi (Source: Wikipedia; Blues.gr).
