Nordic BluesSlide Blues

Norwegian one-man-band blues guitarist and vocalist, known for his ferocious 12-string resonator playing and stomp-box percussion, cutting a solo path through blues, rock and funk across more than a dozen albums.

Bjørn Berge performs entirely alone — one acoustic 12-string, one stomp box, one voice — and has still built one of the most internationally respected solo careers in European blues, playing to audiences across Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands with nothing but rhythm, melody and a foot on a board. He was born on September 23, 1968, in Sveio, Norway, and is based today in nearby Haugesund (Kilde: Store norske leksikon). He started out on electric guitar before switching to banjo after hearing the bluegrass band Gone At Last, but it was hearing Robert Johnson that reoriented him completely toward acoustic blues. He bought a 12-string National Steel resonator guitar and quickly established himself as an unusually distinctive player — one who, as Norway's national encyclopedia has put it, developed "a distinctive expression within a music style often regarded as stagnant" (Kilde: Store norske leksikon / Rockipedia). His technique became his signature: playing rhythm and melodic lead simultaneously on the resonator while stamping out the beat on a stomp box, a setup that earned him the "one-man band" label he still carries. In 1994 he made his recording debut on the album "Berge/Flaaten" with vocalist and harmonica player Jan Flåten; when that partnership ended in 1996, he moved to a solo career that has defined the rest of his work (Kilde: Rockipedia). Every studio album he released between 2000 and 2013 charted on VG-lista, Norway's national album chart. He won the Spellemannprisen — Norway's Grammy equivalent — twice, for "Stringmachine" in 2001 and "Illustrated Man" in 2002, and also took home the Notodden Blues Festival's blues prize in 2001. His catalog blends original compositions with radically reworked covers, most famously a dark, slide-driven acoustic version of Motörhead's "Ace of Spades" that has become his best-known live showpiece and toured everywhere from Trondheim to New Morning in Paris (Kilde: Rockipedia). From 2014 to 2019 he also served as guitarist for the Norwegian folk-rock band Vamp, replacing Torbjørn Økland, and in 2023 released a duo album with Vamp bandmate Odin Staveland — evidence that his solo format, however defining, has never been the only thing he does (Kilde: Store norske leksikon). Across sixteen solo albums spanning nearly three decades, from his 1997 debut through 2026's "Early to Bed," he remains one of Norway's most singular and enduring blues exports.

Musical Influence

Bjørn Berge is widely regarded in Norway as the country's foremost interpreter of Delta blues, and his stripped-down one-man-band format — 12-string resonator, stomp box, voice — has made him one of Europe's most sought-after solo live acts, respected especially across Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. His two Spellemannpriser and his reworking of songs like "Ace of Spades" into acoustic blues showpieces have kept traditional acoustic blues technique visible in Norwegian popular music for three decades (Kilde: Rockipedia / Store norske leksikon).
