Catfish formed in the South of England in 2014, built around guitarist and vocalist Matt Long, alongside his father Paul Long on keyboards and vocals, bassist Adam Pyke and drummer Phil Wilson (with variations in the drum chair across the band's history) (Source: thesoundcafe.com; leedsbluesclub.co.uk). Starting out as a blues covers band, Catfish grew into a multi-award-winning act, being named Blues Band of the Year at the 2020 UK Blues Awards, with Matt Long also winning Blues Instrumentalist of the Year (Source: leedsbluesclub.co.uk).\n\nMatt Long was diagnosed with bowel cancer in April 2023 and continued working on the band's planned fourth studio album, "Time To Fly," through his illness. He died on 6 October 2024 at the age of 29 (Source: rockposer.com; leedsbluesclub.co.uk). His surviving bandmates chose to complete the record rather than leave it unfinished: Paul Long mixed and arranged the album from Matt's unfinished demos and half-written songs, and "Time To Fly" was released in 2025 as the band's fourth studio album and a direct tribute to Matt's career (Source: bluesrockreview.com; rockposer.com). A dedicated tribute album, "With a Little Help from My Friends: A Tribute to Matt Long," featuring guitar contributions from Joe Bonamassa and Walter Trout among others, followed in March 2026 (Source: bluesrockreview.com).\n\nPaul Long has since formed a new project, Burning Rope, with former Catfish bassist Adam Pyke and drummer Mitch Weaving (Source: justlistentothis.co.uk) — Catfish's own catalogue and "Time To Fly" stand as the completed body of work of the band as fronted by Matt Long.

Musical Influence

Catfish's story ended with an unusually direct act of collective care: rather than shelve an unfinished record after their frontman's death, his father and bandmates completed it from his own demos, turning "Time To Fly" into both a fourth album and a closing statement. The subsequent tribute record, drawing contributions from Joe Bonamassa and Walter Trout, reflects the standing Matt Long had built within the wider blues-rock community by 29.
