Copenhagen Blues Band

• Denmark• Active: 1980-1990, 2021-present

Denmark's 1980s blues-boom live legends - no album until their 2021 reunion, 40 years on.

Copenhagen Blues Band spent over a decade as one of Denmark's most in-demand live acts of the 1980s blues boom without ever releasing an album — and then, three decades later, put that right. Formed in 1980 as an offshoot of Smalltown Bluesband, the group centred on Felix Falch (guitar, vocals) and Peter Ostbirk (Hammond organ) (Kilde: side33.dk). In 1984 the lineup expanded with Finn Poulsen (guitar, harmonica, vocals), Nils Bonne (bass) and Frede Christiansen (drums, vocals), and the classic six-piece was completed in 1989 when singer Charlotte Ottenheim joined (Kilde: side33.dk; bluesnews.dk). Through the rest of the decade the band built a reputation as a live draw strong enough to open for both Meat Loaf and B.B. King (Kilde: side33.dk). The band split in 1990 without ever committing a studio album to tape; Poulsen, Bonne and Christiansen went on to record as Full Moon Cats with singer Ane Kramme Abildtoft in 1998 (Kilde: side33.dk). In 2021 all six original members reunited, joined by percussionist Soren Schou, and finally recorded together — releasing the debut album Come a Little Bit Closer in 2022, followed by I'm Not in a Hurry in 2024 on Gateway Music, six original songs including "Get a Hobby," "The Way I Am" and "Highway Man" (Kilde: bluesnews.dk; Gateway Music).

Musical Influence

Copenhagen Blues Band's significance is a case study in delayed reward: a band that helped define the sound of Denmark's 1980s blues boom purely through live performance, strong enough to share bills with Meat Loaf and B.B. King, only to leave no studio recordings behind — until a genuine, all-original-lineup reunion three decades later finally gave that era a permanent record (Kilde: side33.dk; bluesnews.dk).
