C.W. Stoneking, born Christopher William Stoneking in Katherine, Northern Territory, in 1974, writes original songs that sound plucked from a 78rpm record decades before he was born (Source: Wikipedia; official site). His music blends 1920s pre-war blues, New Orleans jazz, jug band, hokum, country, calypso, jump jive and gospel into a personal style built on brass, African and Caribbean percussion, banjo and electric guitar (Source: cwstoneking.com). After two independently released albums in 1999, he broke through with 2005's "King Hokum," then formed his backing band the Primitive Horn Orchestra in 2006. "Jungle Blues" (2008) reached #45 on the ARIA charts and won the ARIA Award for Best Blues & Roots Album, and "Gon' Boogaloo" (2014) went further, peaking at #17 and winning a second ARIA (Source: Wikipedia). In 2018 he featured on Jack White's album "Boarding House Reach." Tom Waits has described him as sounding "600 years old," and Jack White called him a voice "from a ghost ship" (Source: official site testimonials).

Musical Influence

C.W. Stoneking's uncannily authentic pre-war sound has made him a reference point for the modern acoustic/roots blues revival, showing that original songwriting can convincingly inhabit 1920s idioms without becoming pastiche (Source: press reception, official site).
