Dave Hole, born Robert David Hole on 30 March 1948 in Heswall, Cheshire, England, moved with his family to Perth, Western Australia at age four, discovered blues at six after hearing Muddy Waters, and got his first guitar at twelve (Source: Wikipedia). After breaking a finger in a football accident, he developed an entirely unorthodox slide technique, playing with the slide on his index finger and hanging it over the top of the guitar neck rather than using the traditional pinkie-finger approach — a style that became his signature sound (Source: Wikipedia). After two decades on the Australian touring circuit with bands including the Dave Hole Band, his 1990 album "Short Fuse Blues" caught the attention of Chicago's Alligator Records, who signed him as the first non-US-based artist in the label's then 26-year history (Source: Wikipedia). "Steel on Steel" (1995) and "Whole Lotta Blues" (1996) both charted on Billboard's Top Blues Albums, and "Under the Spell" won the 1999 ARIA Award for Best Blues & Roots Album (Source: Wikipedia). Australian rock historian Ian McFarlane called him "the most acclaimed blues guitarist Australia has ever produced" (Source: Wikipedia), while Metallica's Kirk Hammett has praised him as "an amazing Australian slide guitar player" with "perfect" phrasing, intonation and tone (Source: official site).

Musical Influence

Dave Hole's self-taught, unorthodox slide technique redefined what was possible on the instrument and made him Alligator Records' proof that world-class blues could come from outside the United States, opening the door for non-American artists on America's most respected blues label (Source: Wikipedia).
