Duster Bennett (born Anthony Bennett, 23 September 1946, Welshpool, Powys, Wales; died 26 March 1976, Warwickshire, England) was a British blues singer, guitarist and harmonica player known as one of the most innovative one-man bands in the 1960s British blues scene, playing a bass drum with his foot, a harmonica on a rack and guitar simultaneously (Source: Wikipedia). He emerged from the art school music scene around Kingston-upon-Thames and Guildford in the late 1960s, and worked early on as a session harmonica player and briefly as a member of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers (Source: Wikipedia; AllAboutBluesMusic). In 1967 he signed to Mike Vernon's Blue Horizon label, the home of the original Fleetwood Mac (Source: Wikipedia). His debut album "Smiling Like I'm Happy" (1968) was backed by Fleetwood Mac on three tracks and featured Bennett playing a 1952 Les Paul Goldtop guitar given to him by Peter Green in 1968 (Source: Wikipedia). He followed it with the live album "Bright Lights" (1969), "Justa Duster" (1969) and "12dbs" (1970), all on Blue Horizon (Source: Wikipedia). His song "Jumping at Shadows" was later covered by Fleetwood Mac and revived in 1992 by Gary Moore on the album "After Hours" (Source: Wikipedia). Between 1968 and 1970 he was played regularly on John Peel's "Top Gear" radio programme and joined John Mayall's Bluesbreakers as a band member and solo support act on a 1970 US tour (Source: Wikipedia). He continued releasing records through the 1970s, including "Fingertips" and the live album "Levi's Blues" (both 1975, Toadstool Records, the latter with Hound Dog Taylor and Alexis Korner), and remained a popular fixture of the UK blues club circuit until his death (Source: Wikipedia). On 26 March 1976, hours after performing alongside Memphis Slim in Stoke-on-Trent, Bennett was killed when he apparently fell asleep at the wheel of his Ford Transit van and collided with a truck while driving home through Warwickshire, aged 29 (Source: Wikipedia).

Musical Influence

As one of the defining figures of the UK's late-1960s one-man-band blues tradition, Bennett's raw, self-sufficient performing style influenced later solo blues performers, and his song "Jumping at Shadows" was covered by Fleetwood Mac and revived by Gary Moore on his 1992 album "After Hours" (Source: Wikipedia).
