I can't write about Polish blues without starting with Dżem. The band was formed in Tychy in 1973 by brothers Adam and Beno Otręba together with guitarist Paweł Berger (Source: dzem.com.pl; pl.wikipedia.org). But it was vocalist Ryszard Riedel, who joined shortly after, who gave Dżem its soul — a hoarse, vulnerable voice that came to define Polish blues-rock itself. The breakthrough came at the Jarocin Festival in 1980, where the band placed third (Source: pl.wikipedia.org), and in 1985 came the debut album "Cegła," which sold over 115,000 copies and gave them the song "Whisky" — written by Riedel and Adam Otręba, the story of an alcoholic named Billy that has since been called the unofficial hymn of Poland's hippie movement (Source: pl.wikipedia.org). In 1991 came "Sen o Victorii" from the album "Detox," music by Paweł Berger and lyrics by Riedel — a hymn to freedom still sung at every concert (Source: pl.wikipedia.org). Riedel died of heart failure on 30 July 1994, only 41 years old, and the band lost Berger too, in a car accident in 2005. Even so, Dżem never stopped: Jacek Dewódzki (1995–2001) and Maciej Balcar (2001–2024) took over the microphone, before the band did something in January 2024 that stopped all of Poland in its tracks — they brought in Sebastian Riedel, Ryszard's own son, born in 1978 and himself the founder of the band Cree in 1993, as the new vocalist (Source: tvn24.pl; pap.pl). In 2026 they released the album "Sobie potrzebni" with him. Today's lineup is Sebastian Riedel (vocals, guitar, harmonica), Adam Otręba (guitar), Beno Otręba (bass, vocals), Jerzy Styczyński (guitar), Zbigniew Szczerbiński (drums, since 1992) and Janusz Borzucki (keyboards, since 2005) (Source: dzem.com.pl).

Musical Influence

Dżem is considered the very bedrock of Polish blues-rock, and Ryszard Riedel's voice and fate have inspired generations of Polish vocalists to sing the blues in their own mother tongue rather than imitating American models (Source: pl.wikipedia.org). The band's 50-year history — with the founder's own son now carrying the legacy forward — makes Dżem a living link between the birth of Polish blues-rock in the 1970s and today's scene, and a direct inspiration for younger bands that Sebastian Riedel himself has helped shape through Cree.
