Elles Bailey

Born: Bristol, England• United Kingdom• Active: 2017–present
Contemporary BluesAmericana

Bristol-based Americana and blues-rock singer-songwriter whose fourth album swept the 2025 UK Blues Awards, winning Album of the Year, Vocalist of the Year and Broadcaster of the Year.

Elles Bailey's voice is deep, husky and immediately recognizable — and it exists because of a childhood illness, not a stylistic choice. At three years old she contracted viral and bacterial pneumonia and had to breathe through a tube for seventeen days; the damage that left behind reshaped her voice permanently, shocking her parents at the time but becoming, decades later, the defining instrument of her career (Kilde: Wikipedia). She was born in Bristol, England, and grew up on her father's record collection — Chess Records blues sitting alongside classic rock and roll. She started out fronting a local indie rock band before moving decisively into blues and Americana, assembling a touring band built specifically for powerful, full-voltage live performance (Kilde: Wikipedia). Her recording career began with the 2015 EP "Who Am I to Me" and the 2016 collection "The Elberton Sessions," before her full-length debut, "Wildfire," in 2017, recorded partly in Nashville through her label Outlaw Music. Her 2019 album "Road I Call Home" was recorded at Nashville's Sound Emporium, Blackbird Studio, the Warner Studios and Mono Valley Studios, produced by Brad Nowell and Steve Blackmon, with a Nashville session crew including bassist Mike Brignardello, drummer Wes Little and pianist Jimmy Nichols — the album topped the UK Blues Chart and won UK Blues Awards for Album of the Year and Artist of the Year. Its track "Little Piece of Heaven," co-written with Bobby Wood and Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys, won UK Song of the Year at the 2020 Americana Music Honors & Awards (Kilde: Wikipedia; Discogs). The live album "Ain't Nothing But" followed in 2020, recorded with guitarist Joe Wilkins, guitarist Phil King and double bassist Joe James. Her third studio album, "Shining in the Half Light" (2022), was made under extraordinary circumstances — tracked during COVID-19 lockdown while Bailey was pregnant, with producer Dan Weller at Middle Farm Studios and Nashville's Sound Emporium. She reviewed the final mixes from a hospital bed awaiting the birth of her child, then contracted COVID-19 herself weeks after the record's release. The album peaked at number 42 on the UK Albums Chart, backed by a band including drummer Matthew Jones, guitarist Joe Wilkins, guitarist Kris Donegan and keyboardist Jonny Henderson, with backing vocals arranged by Izo FitzRoy (Kilde: Discogs). "Beneath the Neon Glow," released on Cooking Vinyl in 2024 and recorded at Middle Farm Studios and 13 Sound Studios with producer Dan Weller, became her commercial and critical peak, reaching number 12 on the UK Albums Chart and number 1 on the UK Official Blues Chart. It swept the 2025 UK Blues Awards, winning Vocalist of the Year, Broadcaster of the Year and Album of the Year — a result the UK Blues Federation itself has recognized as one of the most decisive showings in the awards' history (Kilde: UK Blues Federation; Discogs). The record featured saxophonist Pete Fraser, harmonica player Cormac Neeson of the Answer, and pedal steel from Holly Carter, and led directly to a stripped-back companion release, "Beneath the Neon Glow (Reimagined)," in July 2025. Bailey has been named UK Blues Awards Artist of the Year three times (2020, 2021, 2023), earning her induction into the UK Blues Hall of Fame, and has twice won UK Americana Awards for Live Artist of the Year. She has opened for Jools Holland, Van Morrison, Don McLean, and Joe Bonamassa's "Keeping the Blues Alive at Sea" cruise, played Glastonbury Festival in 2024, and since 2022 has hosted her own weekly show on Planet Rock Radio (Kilde: Wikipedia). Her next studio album, "Can't Take My Story Away," is expected in 2026.

Musical Influence

Elles Bailey has become one of the defining voices of the contemporary UK blues scene, her 2025 UK Blues Awards sweep for "Beneath the Neon Glow" (Vocalist, Broadcaster and Album of the Year) marking one of the most complete showings in the awards' history. Her Nashville-rooted songwriting, including a UK Song of the Year win co-written with the Black Keys' Dan Auerbach, has helped connect the modern British blues-Americana scene directly to its American source material (Kilde: Wikipedia; UK Blues Federation).
