Frank Muschalle was born in 1969 in Bünde, Westphalia, and today lives in Berlin, where he has been based for most of his more than thirty-year career as a blues and boogie-woogie pianist (Source: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Muschalle; Wikidata Q1443816; frankmuschalle.de). After eleven years of classical piano training, he heard a pianist playing boogie-woogie live — "this music never let go of me again," as he has put it himself — and decided to abandon his teacher-training studies to become a professional musician, a decision he has called difficult at the time (Source: Union Hilfswerk interview by Irena Welslau, 5 March 2019). He became known for his "piano battles" with fellow German/Austrian boogie pianists such as Axel Zwingenberger, Vince Weber and Martin Pyrker, and toured early on with the Austrian blues band Mojo Blues Band, including in South Carolina (Source: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Muschalle). In 2001 he formed the Frank-Muschalle-Trio with former Mojo Blues Band members Dani Gugolz on bass and Peter Müller on drums; a second trio lineup with Matthias Klüter and Dirk Engelmeyer has toured South America, and since 2015 he has also performed as a duo with saxophonist/clarinetist Stephan Holstein (Source: de.wikipedia.org). He has been artistic director of the annual International Jazz Festival on the island of Spiekeroog since 2006, and organises his own boogie-woogie festival in the Münster district of Kinderhaus (Source: de.wikipedia.org). Muschalle was named "Boogie Woogie Pianist of the Year" at the second German Boogie Woogie Awards ("Pinetop") in 2011, and his trio received the "Keeper of the Flame" prize from the Park Lane jazz club in Osnabrück in 2019 (Source: gitarrebass.de; Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung, 1 July 2019, cited via Wikipedia). He has released somewhere between 13 and 15 albums since 1995, recorded with American blues veterans such as Hubert Sumlin, Carey Bell, Bob Stroger and Louisiana Red, and has played over 2,000 concerts over the course of his career (Source: de.wikipedia.org; frankmuschalle.de/en/about-frank).

Musical Influence

Frank Muschalle's significance lies in how systematically he has built on the American boogie-woogie tradition of Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson and Little Brother Montgomery, and kept it alive in Germany through piano battles, festival work, and direct collaboration with American blues veterans such as Hubert Sumlin and Louisiana Red (Source: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Muschalle). As artistic director of the Spiekeroog jazz festival since 2006, and as organiser of his own boogie-woogie festival in Münster, he has given younger musicians a stage and a professional community around a genre that otherwise leads a fairly quiet existence in the German music landscape (Source: de.wikipedia.org). The British blues press has described his playing as "masterclass" level, noting that decades after his debut he still delivers "pure blues & boogie woogie throughout" on his releases (Source: Ian McKenzie, Blues In The South; Norman Darwen, Blues In Britain).
