Fried Okra

• Denmark• Active: 2006-present

Copenhagen trio bringing North Mississippi Hill Country blues to Scandinavia since 2006.

Fried Okra formed in Copenhagen in 2006, taking their name — and their sound — from the American South: a trio built on the raw, hypnotic groove of North Mississippi Hill Country blues rather than the polished Chicago style more common in European blues circles. Since 2016 the band has settled into its core lineup of Morten Lunn (lead vocals, guitar, diddley bow), Anders Wallin (bass, backing vocals) and Thomas Crawfurd (drums, percussion, backing vocals) (Kilde: friedokraband.dk). Lunn fronts the band as principal songwriter, drawing explicitly on John Lee Hooker, R.L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough, and Mojo Blues Bar in central Copenhagen has served as the band's home base and a hub of the city's blues scene (Kilde: Blues.gr interview with Morten Lunn and Thomas Foldberg). The band has been nominated for Danish Blues Album of the Year three times (2007, 2015, 2021) and for the 2021 Blues Live Award, won the Danish Blues Challenge in 2017-2018, and placed second at the European Blues Challenge in 2018 (Kilde: friedokraband.dk). Fried Okra's studio catalogue runs from the 2007 debut This Is Your Chance, France Baby! through Black Cherry (2009), There's a World Outside My Door (2013), Back Into the River (2015), the Fried Alive single/EP (2018) and Doing It Right (2020), with a seventh release, the 2024 live album Deluxe Live, expanding the core trio with Alain Apaloo (guitar), Rune Hojmark (guitar, mandolin, lap steel) and Kristian Jorgensen (organ), recorded at Bjergsted Culture House and Mojo Blues Bar (Kilde: friedokraband.dk; musicrider.org).

Musical Influence

Fried Okra's significance in Danish blues is as one of the country's clearest ambassadors for North Mississippi Hill Country blues — a style built on droning one-chord grooves rather than conventional 12-bar changes — helped along by a European Blues Challenge runner-up finish in 2018 that put the band in front of the wider continental blues scene (Kilde: friedokraband.dk).
