Gegè Telesforo (born Eugenio Roberto Antonio Telesforo, 14 October 1961, in Foggia) is an Italian jazz and funk vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, composer, bandleader and broadcaster, internationally recognised as one of the foremost living practitioners of scat singing (Source: Wikipedia; Rockol). His music sits primarily in jazz, funk and soul, built around a rigorous, groove-driven rhythmic sense in which swing, funk and black American music traditions are in constant dialogue (Source: Rockol; All About Jazz). Discovered as a drummer and jazz singer by broadcaster Renzo Arbore, Telesforo became a familiar face on Italian television through Arbore's programmes, including "Quelli della notte" (1985) and several editions of the Sanremo Festival broadcast, and has been a special guest of Arbore's L'Orchestra Italiana since 1997 (Source: Wikipedia). He hosted radio programmes across RAI Radio 1, RDS and Radio Capital between 1977 and 2007 (Source: Wikipedia). In the 1990s, through his association with American pianist, singer and producer Ben Sidran, he recorded for the New York label Go Jazz and performed alongside jazz greats including Jon Hendricks, Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry and Dee Dee Bridgewater; he has also collaborated with Italian artists Lucio Dalla, Giorgia and Tosca (Source: Rockol; Wikipedia). His discography spans fifteen studio albums since his self-titled 1990 debut (Gala Records/Ricordi), including "Gegè & the Mother Tongue" (1996, Go Jazz, produced by Ben Sidran), "Nu Joy" (2012) and "Il Mondo In Testa" (2020) (Source: Wikipedia; Rockol). While his catalogue is rooted in jazz and funk rather than blues, his 2024 album "Big Mama Legacy" (Ropeadope/Groove Master Edition) is an explicit blues tribute — dedicated to Rome's historic Big Mama blues club, active from 1984 until its pandemic-era closure, and recorded with a group of leading Italian jazz musicians including Christian Mascetta, Vittorio Solimene and the Cutello brothers, with a guest appearance by pianist Danilo Rea (Source: Musicletter.it; Musica Jazz). Both Telesforo and the blues-rock duo Bud Spencer Blues Explosion appeared on the bill of Rovigo's Delta Blues festival in 2020, reflecting his occasional presence on the Italian blues festival circuit despite his primarily jazz identity (Source: Polesine24). Since 2023 he has served as official spokesperson for the charity City Angels, and remains an active touring artist and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador as of 2026 (Source: Wikipedia; Instagram).

Musical Influence

As one of the most internationally connected Italian jazz vocalists of his generation — having recorded and performed alongside Ben Sidran, Jon Hendricks, Dizzy Gillespie and Dee Dee Bridgewater — Telesforo is widely credited as a leading contemporary practitioner and innovator of scat singing, and his 2024 blues-tribute album "Big Mama Legacy" has introduced his scat-and-groove vocal style to a new blues-listening audience (Source: Wikipedia; Rockol; Musicletter.it).
