The Bergen R&B/blues band, formed 1982 by Arle Hjelmeland and Bård Ose, that coined "garage-soul" on 2008's "Mojo Energy" and later pioneered Norway's first dialect-based blues albums for children.

Good Time Charlie has spent over four decades doing something few blues bands anywhere attempt: writing blues records specifically for children, in regional Norwegian dialect, without diluting the genre's core sound in the process (Kilde: Wikipedia). The band was formed in Bergen in 1982 by vocalist and harmonica player Arle Hjelmeland and drummer Bård Ose, with roots stretching between Bergen and Førde, and quickly established itself as one of Norway's leading acts working the 1950s and '60s soul and rhythm-and-blues tradition. Their first single, "Davy Crockett/Come On," appeared in 1988, and their full-length debut, "Coming Down With the Blues" (1995), is now regarded as a Norwegian blues classic (Kilde: Wikipedia). Across eleven albums released between 1988 and 2023, the band's defining creative leap came with "Mojo Energy" (2008), which coined the term "garage-soul" to describe its fusion of raw, intense 1960s garage rock with soul's explosive, energetic sound — a description the band itself used and one that earned wide critical acclaim. Both "Mojo Energy" and "Ready to Rumble" (2017) received Spellemannspris nominations in the blues category. Alongside their adult-oriented catalogue, Good Time Charlie pioneered Norway's first dialect-based blues albums for children, "Draumeblues og blåsus" (2013) and "Jubel og skrubbsår" (2015), performed live through their "Jubelblues" concert concept aimed specifically at introducing younger audiences to blues music (Kilde: Wikipedia).

Musical Influence

Good Time Charlie's "garage-soul" fusion on "Mojo Energy" gave Norwegian blues-soul a distinct new vocabulary, while their dialect-based children's blues albums opened an entirely new audience pathway into the genre that no other Norwegian blues act had attempted (Kilde: Wikipedia).
