Gregor Hilden was born on 4 December 1963 in Düsseldorf, and today lives in Münster, where he has been a central figure on the German blues scene since the early 1980s (Source: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregor_Hilden; Wikidata Q49168190). He started on classical guitar at 12, switched to electric guitar at 15, and had about six months of lessons from Düsseldorf blues guitarist Peter Driessen before teaching himself the rest of the style (Source: gregorhilden.de/info.php). At 18 he landed his first professional work as a guitarist in Münster musical-theatre productions, including "Pippin," and later became the house guitarist at the Münster Stadttheater (Source: de.wikipedia.org). For more than ten years he served as editor-in-chief of the German guitar magazine "Akustik Gitarre," a post he left in 2005 to focus full-time on touring as demand for his live shows grew (Source: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregor_Hilden). He has released records under his own name since 1994, with a catalogue that now counts somewhere between 14 and 18 albums depending on how you count (Source: gregorhilden.de/info.php; gitarrebass.de). Since 2018 his main project has been the Gregor Hilden Organ Trio, alongside Hammond organist Wolfgang Roggenkamp and drummer Dirk Brand, with the albums "First Take" (2018), "Vintage Wax" (2020/21) and "New Boogaloo" (2024) (Source: gregorhilden.de/material/HildenOrganTrioInfo.pdf). Since 2007 he has also had an ongoing collaboration with singer/guitarist Richie Arndt, with the duo albums "Moments – unplugged" (2017) and "Moments – electric" (2019), and from 2025 a joint Peter Green tribute programme (Source: de.wikipedia.org; radiofabrik.at). Alongside his music he runs the concert series "Greg's Bluesnight" in the Münster region and the vintage guitar shop "Greg's Guitars" (Source: gitarrebass.de). The trade press describes his playing style as "economical, flexible and elegant," with Peter Green and B.B. King as his declared idols (Source: gitarrebass.de/thema/gregor-hilden).

Musical Influence

Gregor Hilden's role in German blues is as much institutional as musical: as longtime editor-in-chief of "Akustik Gitarre," he shaped how a whole generation of German guitarists read about and understood blues and roots guitar playing, long before he became a full-time touring artist himself (Source: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregor_Hilden). Through the Greg's Bluesnight concert series he has, for years, given international blues artists a regular stage in the Münster region, and through Greg's Guitars he has become a gathering point for vintage-guitar enthusiasts in Germany (Source: gitarrebass.de). That he is still, more than thirty years after his debut album, described by the trade press as one of Europe's best bluesmen — and that his song "Farewell Blues" has been licensed for an American film — shows the reach of a career that extends well beyond Germany's borders (Source: Mannheimer Morgen, 2004; gregorhilden.de).
