Hans Theessink was born on 5 April 1948 in Enschede, the Netherlands, and has become one of Europe's most respected acoustic country-blues artists (Source: de.wikipedia.org; en.wikipedia.org). Self-taught on guitar after hearing recordings of Big Bill Broonzy and Lead Belly in the early 1960s, he also picked up mandolin and banjo, and began his performing life as a street musician with the Silly Skiffle Group across the Netherlands and Germany. After a spell in Denmark, where he recorded his 1970 debut album "Next Morning at Sunrise," he relocated permanently to Vienna, Austria in 1982, following a 1979 concert where he met his future wife Milica Djokic, who has managed his career ever since through their own label and agency, Blue Groove (Source: de.wikipedia.org). Theessink's music draws on Delta blues, folk, gospel, soul, Cajun, New Orleans jazz and African traditions, played almost entirely on acoustic instruments without digital effects. Since 2004 he has toured with the Hans Theessink Band, and has worked closely with tuba player Jon Sass since 1986. His most celebrated collaborations include several albums with American soul-blues singer Terry Evans -- "Visions" (2008), "Delta Time" (2012, featuring Ry Cooder) and the live album "True & Blue" (2015) -- as well as "Pay Day" (2021) with Big Daddy Wilson. Blues pianist Charles Brown recorded Theessink's composition "Love Sweet Love" on his own 1998 album "Lifeline." In 2001 Theessink received Vienna's Goldener Rathausmann award. He has released more than two dozen albums across his career, several of which reached the Austrian Top 40, with "Visions" (2008) peaking at number 8. He continues to record and tour into his late 70s, marking milestone "Birthday Bash" concert releases in 2009, 2014, 2019 and 2025.

Musical Influence

Hans Theessink is widely regarded as one of Europe's most significant stylistic innovators of acoustic country-blues, drawing collaborators of the caliber of Ry Cooder and Charles Brown to his own compositions and building a career that has carried the Delta blues tradition to German-speaking audiences for over five decades (Source: de.wikipedia.org).
