The first time I heard Henrik Freischlader play, I thought: here is a guitarist who took Gary Moore's aching tone and built an entire blues kingdom of his own around it. Freischlader was born on 3 November 1982 in Cologne but grew up in Wuppertal, where he is still based today (Source: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henrik_Freischlader; Wikidata). He is self-taught — picked up guitar and drums by ear — and has said Gary Moore is "the reason I play guitar at all" (Source: gitarrebass.de interview). As a teenager he played in the local bands Lash and Bluescream before forming the Henrik Freischlader Band in 2004 (Source: English Wikipedia). His debut album, "The Blues," came out on ZYX Music in 2006, and in 2009 he launched his own label, Cable Car Records, which has released almost his entire catalogue since (Source: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henrik_Freischlader). He has opened for B.B. King, Gary Moore, Peter Green, Johnny Winter and Joe Bonamassa — and Bonamassa himself contributed a guest solo on the title track of "Still Frame Replay" (2011) (Source: Last.fm). Meeting his great hero Gary Moore backstage in Mosbach in 2009 became a turning point he still speaks warmly about, one that eventually led to the 2017 tribute album "Blues for Gary," featuring some of Moore's own former collaborators (Source: gitarrebass.de interview). Freischlader has won the German Blues Award in the guitar category three times (2010, 2012, 2014), while "House in the Woods" (2012) and the Henrik Freischlader Trio's "Openness" (2016) each won Best Recording (Source: German Blues Awards, Wikipedia). Since 2018 he has also been the touring guitarist in comedian-musician Helge Schneider's live band, alongside his own career (Source: Klotz artist page). In November 2024 the band lost its longtime Hammond organist Moritz "Mr. Mo" Fuhrhop, and has since carried on as a trio with René Pütz on bass and Leon Mucke on drums (Source: de.wikipedia.org; RockTimes concert review, Goslar 2025).

Musical Influence

Henrik Freischlader's influence has less to do with founding a whole new school of blues playing and more with showing a generation of German blues guitarists that you can build an international career from Wuppertal without ever moving to Chicago or Austin. He is today regarded as one of Germany's most successful and prolific blues guitarists, with three German Blues Awards in the guitar category (Source: German Blues Awards, Wikipedia). As a producer he has passed on both craft and a signature sound to younger artists such as Canadian singer Layla Zoe and saxophonist Tommy Schneller, both of whom recorded albums produced by Freischlader on his own Cable Car Records label (Source: discography data, Cable Car Records). That he was able, in 2017, to gather some of Gary Moore's own former musicians for the tribute album "Blues for Gary" shows how close he now stands to the very international blues-rock tradition he grew up admiring (Source: gitarrebass.de interview).

Stories & Anecdotes
