H.P. Lange

H.P. Lange has spent close to four decades as one of Denmark's foremost acoustic blues travellers, splitting his year between roughly a hundred concerts across Scandinavia, Europe and the United States and a Jutland farm with horses, lambs and 6,000 Christmas trees. Born Hans Peter Lange on 28 April 1963 near Aarhus, Denmark, the son of a minister, he sang in church choirs before discovering blues at 16 and going on to study music for three years at the Aarhus conservatory (Kilde: thecountryblues.com; da.wikipedia.org). He turned professional around 1988, performing acoustically on his vintage National Resonator and Martin 00028EC, solo or backed by his band Big Gumbo. In 1994 he travelled to Louisiana and settled for a time, befriending Mississippi hill-country blues figures Kenny Brown, Junior Kimbrough and R.L. Burnside, and playing dates with them in Memphis and the Mississippi Delta (Kilde: thecountryblues.com). He formed The Delta Connection in 2006 with Paul Junior (bass) and Soren Poulsen (drums), later joined by Jens Kristian Dam on drums from 2008, and his long-running Big Gumbo lineup — Niels Bonefas (banjo, fiddle), Dave Strevens (upright bass) and Dam on drums — draws as much on Cajun and old-time string-band music as on Delta and Piedmont blues (Kilde: da.wikipedia.org; bluesnews.dk). Lange's significance lies in keeping acoustic Delta and Piedmont blues traditions genuinely alive in Denmark rather than performed as museum pieces — his direct friendships and stage time with North Mississippi hill-country originators Junior Kimbrough, R.L.
