Born in Paris on 17 April 1950, Jean-Jacques Milteau discovered the harmonica through 1960s folk and rock (Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones), and a trip to the United States brought him face to face with American blues (Source: en.wikipedia.org). He first made his name as an in-demand session musician, accompanying a long list of major French artists — Yves Montand, Eddy Mitchell, Jean-Jacques Goldman, Maxime Le Forestier, Barbara, Charles Aznavour, Renaud (Source: en.wikipedia.org). He released his first solo album, "Blues Harp," in 1989, and went on to win Victoires de la Musique for "Explorer" (1991) and "Memphis" (2001) — a rare feat for a harmonica player in France. In 2014 he was named Officier des Arts et des Lettres, and his catalogue now runs to 18 albums including "Explorer," "Routes" and "Bastille Blues" (Source: en.wikipedia.org; jjmilteau.net).

Musical Influence

Milteau did more than any other musician to bring the blues harmonica into mainstream French popular music, both as the sound behind decades of chanson recordings and as a solo artist whose Victoires de la Musique gave the instrument a rare institutional recognition in France (Source: en.wikipedia.org).
