James Kevin "Jimi" Hocking, born 7 June 1963 in Melbourne, grew up around music — his father Kevin was a pianist and composer, his mother a singer — and taught himself guitar after receiving one as a Christmas present (Source: Wikipedia). Seeing Stevie Ray Vaughan perform in the early 1980s pushed him toward the blues (Source: Wikipedia). He started performing in Melbourne bands in 1983, formed The Astroboys in 1984 and co-founded the hard-rock band The Aströs in 1986, before temporarily stepping in for Bob Spencer in The Angels during their 1988 Live Line Tour (Source: Wikipedia). He formed Jimi the Human and Spectre 7 in 1989, and from 1994 to 1997 was a member of The Screaming Jets, appearing on two of their studio albums, rejoining the band again from 2010 (Source: Wikipedia). Across a discography of more than fifteen releases since 1990, spanning hard rock and blues, he has recorded as guitarist, vocalist and mandolinist, with albums including "Blue Guitar" (1999) and "Blue Mandolin" (2007) reflecting his blues side directly (Source: Wikipedia). In 2004 he won the Melbourne Blues Appreciation Society's Blues Performer of the Year, and in 2005 he won the Solo/Duo category at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis — a rare Australian win on blues' biggest global stage (Source: Wikipedia).

Musical Influence

Moving fluidly between hard rock arenas with The Angels and The Screaming Jets and the intimate blues/mandolin records under his own name, Jimi Hocking has shown Australian blues can thrive alongside a rock career rather than in opposition to it, crowned by his 2005 International Blues Challenge win in Memphis (Source: Wikipedia).
