Norwegian-born guitarist, producer and owner of Greaseland Studios in San Jose. Longtime member of Rick Estrin & the Nightcats, a Blues Music Award and Grammy-nominated producer, and one of the most in-demand session guitarists in modern blues.

Kid Andersen's name is stamped, in one production role or another, on what feels like half the blues records coming out of California — and it all runs through a converted garage studio in San Jose he built himself, named, with total lack of pretension, Greaseland. He was born Christoffer "Kid" Lund-Andersen on January 15, 1980, in Herre, a small town in Telemark, Norway — not Kristiansand, as sometimes reported. He is a cousin of the Norwegian blues artist Joakim Tinderholt (Kilde: norsk Wikipedia). By age eleven his talent had already caught the attention of Norwegian blues guitar teacher Morten Omlid, who steered him toward traditional blues rather than the rock he might otherwise have drifted into (Kilde: Wikipedia). He gained his first recognition as a producer in Norway in 2009, producing Noora Noor's comeback album "Soul Deep" (Kilde: norsk Wikipedia). In 2001, at twenty-one, he moved to the United States and joined saxophonist and singer Terry Hanck's band, quickly establishing himself on the West Coast blues circuit. He went on to play in Charlie Musselwhite's band — winning a Blues Music Award for Musselwhite's "Delta Hardware" — before stepping into one of the most significant guitar chairs in modern blues: when Little Charlie Baty retired from touring with Little Charlie & the Nightcats, Andersen took his place, and the band was renamed Rick Estrin & the Nightcats (Kilde: Wikipedia; norsk Wikipedia). He is CEO and chief engineer of his own Greaseland Studios in San Jose, California, which has become one of the most productive rooms in contemporary blues recording. As a producer he has worked on Rick Estrin & the Nightcats' "One Wrong Turn" (2012) and "Groovin' in Greaseland" (2017), Tommy Castro's "Stompin' Ground" (2017), and Junior Watson's "Nothin' to It But to Do It" (2019, co-produced, featuring his wife Lisa Leuschner Andersen). He has also toured extensively with Elvin Bishop on the Red Dog Speaks Tour (Kilde: Wikipedia). His own solo catalog includes "Rock Awhile" (2003), "Guitarmageddon" (2005, with Vidar Busk and Junior Watson), "Greaseland" (2006, Spellemannpris-nominated) and "The Dreamer" (2008). In 2024 he released "Spirits and Soul," a double album trading vocals and songs with his wife, Lisa "Little Baby" Andersen, which won the 2024 Spellemannprisen in the blues category — Norway's Grammy equivalent — announced in 2025 (Kilde: norsk Wikipedia). He also won the Notodden Blues Festival's blues prize in 2011, and has collected multiple Blues Music Award nominations in the Best Instrumentalist – Guitar and Gibson Guitar categories between 2013 and 2023 (Kilde: Wikipedia).

Musical Influence

Kid Andersen has become one of the most influential behind-the-scenes figures in contemporary American blues, his Greaseland Studios functioning as an unofficial hub for the West Coast blues scene through his production work for Rick Estrin & the Nightcats, Tommy Castro, Junior Watson and dozens of others. His 2024 Spellemannpris win for "Spirits and Soul" with his wife Lisa also connects modern American blues production directly back to the Norwegian blues scene that first trained him (Kilde: Wikipedia; norsk Wikipedia).
