Luca Sestak was born on 10 January 1995 in Celle, Lower Saxony, and is today one of Germany's best-known young voices in blues and boogie-woogie piano, with a body of work that extends into jazz and jazz-pop as well (Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luca_Sestak; Last.fm). His father introduced him to the piano at age seven or nine, and after preparing a Beethoven sonata around age eleven and a half, he has said, "it was after this point that playing the piano began to really give me pleasure" (Source: boogie-online.de; No Dead Guys interview). Around the same age he discovered jazz, blues and boogie-woogie through YouTube, and found his way into jazz via a digital demo of Bach's "Solfeggietto" in a jazz-trio arrangement by Eugen Cicero — a piece he later recorded himself on the album "Lighter Notes" (2024) (Source: No Dead Guys interview). In December 2006 he posted his first piano videos to YouTube, and as a 12-year-old in 2007 he attended the International Boogie Woogie Festival in Lugano, Switzerland, where he saw Axel Zwingenberger perform — a formative experience that pulled him toward boogie-woogie (Source: boogie-online.de). As a teenager he organised his own concert series, "Blues im Schaf," in Karlsruhe from 2010 to 2012, and in 2011, at 16, he performed at what is billed as the world's largest boogie-woogie festival, in Laroquebrou, France (Source: nodeadguys.com). He has played for the German federal president and the president of Ireland, and completed a three-week tour of China in 2018 (Source: nodeadguys.com). In 2019 he signed with Sony Music and in 2020 released the album "Right or Wrong," which critics compared to Jamie Cullum (Source: Discogs; press coverage). He has been an official KAWAI piano artist since 2018, and in 2024 released the trio album "Lighter Notes," recorded live with no click tracks, featuring six original compositions and reinterpretations of Chopin, C.P.E. Bach, Friedrich Gulda and "House of the Rising Sun" (Source: nodeadguys.com; jazzweekly.com).

Musical Influence

Luca Sestak's significance lies in how, as one of very few young European pianists, he has made boogie-woogie and blues piano relevant to an audience that might otherwise associate the genre with an older generation — his early YouTube videos, posted from age eleven onward, have together drawn tens of millions of views and introduced an entirely new audience to the music (Source: boogie-online.de). By signing with Sony Music in 2019 and bridging classical piano tradition, jazz and blues, he has shown that boogie-woogie can carry commercial weight beyond the traditional blues community (Source: Discogs; press coverage). International trade press has called him an "extraordinary musician" and noted that his records "will undoubtedly hold a unique place" in a listener's music collection (Source: Mainly Piano; Paris Move, Thierry De Clemensat).
