Martyna Jakubowicz, born Żychiewicz on 24 February 1955 in Kraków, is one of the most independent voices in Polish music history — daughter of writer and journalist Tadeusz Żychiewicz, a former Home Army soldier associated with "Tygodnik Powszechny" (Source: pl.wikipedia.org). Self-taught and shaped by the American folk tradition — Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell are her stated reference points — she made her professional debut in 1977 at Klub Remont in Warsaw (Source: pl.wikipedia.org). During martial law in Poland in the 1980s she took part in the underground-released album "I Ching," a testament to her refusal of commercial compromise (Source: martynajakubowicz.pl). Her breakthrough came with "W domach z betonu nie ma wolnej miłości" (1982) — lyrics by Andrzej Jakubowicz, music by Martyna herself, inspired by life in Warsaw's Stegny district — which topped the charts on Polskie Radio Program III (Source: pl.wikipedia.org). Her discography runs from the debut album "Maquillage" (1983) through the gold-certified "Kołysz mnie" (1992) to "Tylko Dylan" (2005, a tribute to Bob Dylan) and "Zwykły włóczęga" (2018) (Source: pl.wikipedia.org). She has collaborated with Zbigniew Hołdys and the band Dżem, and is documented performing alongside Dżem's Ryszard Riedel at the Jarocin Festival in 1989 (Source: YouTube — "Jarocin 1989" recording). In 2024 she published the autobiography "Trudna sztuka latania" and received the Złoty Fryderyk, the Polish recording industry's honorary lifetime-achievement award, following earlier Fryderyk nominations in 1995 and 2011 and the Mateusz Award from Polskie Radio Program III in 2016 (Source: martynajakubowicz.pl; pl.wikipedia.org).

Musical Influence

As one of very few female singer-songwriters in Polish rock/blues in the 1980s, Martyna Jakubowicz paved the way for later women artists in the genre, and her independent, uncommercial stance — cultivated through underground releases during martial law — has made her a model of artistic integrity in Polish music (Source: pl.wikipedia.org; martynajakubowicz.pl). The 2024 Złoty Fryderyk award is the Polish music industry's official recognition of that lifetime body of work.
