Maurizio Pugno (born 3 August 1966 in Gubbio, Umbria) is an Italian blues guitarist, composer and arranger with over 35 years on the European blues scene (Source: official site). He began performing professionally in 1982 and formed his first band, ½ Blues Band, with harmonica player Rico Migliarini in 1985 (Source: Italian Wikipedia). From 1986 to 1994 he played guitar in the Wolves Blues Band, touring Italy including the Pistoia Blues Festival in 1988 and recording the LP "Last Nite," and collaborated with jazz drummer Dennis Chambers (Source: Italian Wikipedia). In 1996 he co-founded the electric quartet Rico Blues Combo, whose 1997 album "White Whiskey" was praised as one of the best Italian blues albums of its time; the band toured Europe and worked with American musicians including Sugar Ray Norcia (Roomful of Blues) and Dave Specter, releasing "Sleepy Town" (1999), "Live at Murphy's" (2002), "House of Blues Rags" (2005) and, after a long gap, "20" (2016) (Source: Italian Wikipedia). From 2001 he toured as guitarist for saxophonist Sax Gordon and in 2002 performed alongside Deep Purple drummer Ian Paice (Source: Italian Wikipedia). Pugno launched a solo career in 2007, recording three albums for Pacific Blues Records with vocalists Sugar Ray Norcia and Mark DuFresne (Roomful of Blues): "That's What I Found Out" (2007), which won an award for best European blues CD of the year in Paris; "Kill the Coffee" (2009); and the live CD/DVD "Made in Italy – Live at Gubbio Opera House" (2012) (Source: official site; Discogs). Over his career he has opened for B.B. King, Mavis Staples, Peter Green, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Burdon and The Fabulous Thunderbirds (Source: official site). In 2019 he signed with the Labilia Srl production company as musician, artistic director and project coordinator, and founded Pugno Blues Band, which evolved into the wider ensemble SACROMUD Pugno Collective, blending blues with soul, roots, rock and R&B under the banner "the Overground Blues" (Source: official site; Blues.gr). In May 2025 Sacromud released "The Sun Experience," recorded at the historic Sun Studio in Memphis — Sacromud is the first and only Italian group to record there, following Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison and U2, and used the original piano on which Lewis recorded "Great Balls of Fire" in 1957 (Source: Guitar Club Magazine; Zarabazà).

Musical Influence

As the guitarist and bandleader behind Rico Blues Combo and Sacromud, Pugno has spent four decades bridging Italian blues with soul, roots and rock, most recently becoming the first Italian act to record at Memphis's Sun Studio (Source: official site; press).
