Michael van Merwyk was born in 1969 and is based in his hometown of Rheda-Wiedenbrück in North Rhine-Westphalia, where he grew up near a local jazz and blues club (Source: Wikimedia Commons; NW/Neue Westfälische, 2020; The Country Blues). He taught himself guitar from age 15, with early influences from Joe Strummer and The Clash, Tony Iommi, and local musicians Gerry Spooner and Roger Clarke-Johnson — but it was hearing Howlin' Wolf's "Smokestack Lightnin'" on the WDR radio show "Blues At Night" that made the blues truly take hold of him (Source: Blues.gr interview by Michael Limnios). As house guitarist at the "Roadhouse" blues club in Rheda-Wiedenbrück, he got to back touring blues legends such as Jimmy Rogers, Joe Louis Walker, Lazy Lester, Larry Garner and Louisiana Red — an informal apprenticeship he has himself pointed to as decisive (Source: The Country Blues; Blues.gr interview). For nearly twenty years he worked as a graphic designer to support his five children while playing locally, and he still designs album covers for artists such as Duke Robillard, Big Daddy Wilson, Mike Zito, Sue Foley and Samantha Fish (Source: The Country Blues; bluesoul.de). In 2009 Big Daddy Wilson invited him into his acoustic trio, and van Merwyk moved to touring full-time, as bandleader of "Michael van Merwyk & Bluesoul" (Source: thecountryblues.com). In 2011 he won the German Blues Challenge with Bluesoul, and in 2013 the band placed second at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis — the first European band ever to reach that placing in the competition's history, among 124 acts from 16 countries (Source: bluesoul.de/solo). He was voted Germany's best blues vocalist and best blues guitarist at the German Blues Awards in 2016, won the Blues Baltica award for best vocalist in 2020, and has won the German Blues Award in the Solo/Duo category three years running, 2022–2024 (Source: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_Blues_Awards; nw.de). In 2024 he marked 40 years on stage with the album "Blues Everywhere I Go," featuring guest musicians including slide guitarist Abi Wallenstein (Source: Blues Blast Magazine).

Musical Influence

Michael van Merwyk's significance lies in how he has kept a "songster" tradition alive within a German blues scene that is often more strictly genre-faithful — he openly blends Bowie, Judas Priest, Depeche Mode and The Clash into his blues repertoire, and has said himself that "blues purists always turn up their noses a bit, but I don't care" (Source: Neue Westfälische, 1 August 2016). His band's 2013 finish — Europe's best placing ever at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis — put German blues on the international map in a way few other domestic artists have managed (Source: bluesoul.de/solo). As a longtime album-cover designer for artists such as Duke Robillard, Big Daddy Wilson and Samantha Fish, he also has an invisible but real influence on how international blues is presented visually (Source: thecountryblues.com; bluesoul.de).
