Ole Frimer Band

Also known as: Ole Frimer / Frimer Band / Blue Junction

Born: 3 November 1952, Aalborg, Denmark• Denmark• Active: 1968-present

Ph.D. biologist turned virtuoso Danish blues guitarist - Frimer Band, Blue Junction, and beyond.

Ole Frimer has spent more than half a century turning a biology career and a blues guitar into parallel vocations — a Ph.D. scientist who became one of Denmark's most decorated blues guitarists, and a virtuoso known for abandoning the pick in the early 1980s in favour of an unorthodox fingerpicking and strumming technique. Born Ole Erik Frimer on 3 November 1952 in Aalborg, Denmark, he bought his first acoustic guitar at 13 and was playing in local blues and soul bands by 16 (Kilde: Wikipedia). At 20 he moved to Aarhus to study biology, immersing himself in the city's blues scene, and in 1989 formed Frimer Band, debuting on record with the live album Blues Uncovered in 1990. Soon after, he was appointed scientific director of Copenhagen University's Arctic Station in Greenland, a post he held from 1990 to 1993, before completing a Ph.D. in biology in Copenhagen in 1994 (Kilde: Wikipedia). Frimer Band released Handmade (1995), Sheltered Roads (1997) and Second Live (1999) before Frimer formed Blue Junction in the mid-1990s with guitarist Uffe Steen, debuting with 22:17 Live in Aarhus (1998) and going on to release Diamond on a Dump (2002), The Journey (2004) and the Danish Music Award-winning Live Out of Love (2007), alongside two Real Blues Awards for Best Live European Blues Recording (2001) and Best European Blues Act (2004) (Kilde: Wikipedia). He also recorded and performed with fellow Danish blues figure Peter Thorup, releasing På Stedet (2006) together (Kilde: Wikipedia). Since forming the present-day Ole Frimer Band in 2008, he has released Blålys (2014), Live at Blues Baltica (2015), Færd (2020) and Live in Eppingen (2020), and received a Bank Nordik Honorary Award in 2011 and the Bluesnight Award for Outstanding Effort in Danish Blues in 2021 (Kilde: Wikipedia).

Musical Influence

Frimer's influence rests on a genuinely unusual guitar voice — built on an unorthodox pick-free technique shaped by Jim Messina, Albert Collins and Jeff Beck — and on Blue Junction's run of European recognition (two Real Blues Awards, a Danish Music Award) that made Danish blues guitar playing visible on the continental scene through the 2000s (Kilde: Wikipedia).
