Otis Grand, born Fred Bishti on 14 February 1950 in Beirut, Lebanon, was a blues guitarist and bandleader who spent his career between the United States, Lebanon, France and the United Kingdom (Source: Wikipedia). He established himself in the American blues scene playing at Eli's Mile High Club in Oakland, California, where he made contacts including Joe Louis Walker, who went on to produce his debut album, "Always Hot" (1988) (Source: Wikipedia; Discogs). His musical influences included B.B. King, Otis Rush, Johnny Otis and T-Bone Walker (Source: Wikipedia). By the late 1980s he had relocated to the UK, where he and his band the Dance Kings became a popular nightclub attraction; he was voted "Best UK Blues Guitarist" seven years running, from 1990 to 1996, by Blues Connection magazine (Source: Wikipedia). His discography includes "My Way or the Highway" (1991, JSP, with Guitar Shorty), "He Knows the Blues" (1992, featuring Joe Louis Walker, Calvin Owens, Pee Wee Ellis and Jimmy Nelson, a W.C. Handy Award nominee), "Big Blues from Texas" (1993, with Phillip Walker), "Nothing Else Matters" (1994, with Curtis Salgado, Sugar Ray Norcia and Kim Wilson) and his best-known album, "Perfume & Grime" (1996, with Joe Louis Walker, Curtis Salgado, Luther Allison and Darrell Nulisch), which made him a substantial guitar draw across the US and Canada (Source: Wikipedia; AllMusic). In 2002 he recorded the duo album "Guitar Brothers" with Joe Louis Walker, the two musicians having both come up through San Francisco's blues scene (Source: Discogs). In 2009 the Republic of Lebanon honoured him with the Presidential Medal for Arts (Source: Wikipedia). He lived in Croydon, England, for much of his final decades, making occasional performance appearances into the late 2000s (Source: Wikipedia). Otis Grand died in June 2023 at age 73, with his passing announced by music promoter Pete Feenstra (Source: Wikipedia; Blues Magazine NL). A final release, "Live At Burnley Blues Festival / Collaborations & Rarities" (JSP), appeared in 2023 (Source: Wikipedia).
