Paul Lamb, born 9 July 1955 in Blyth, Northumberland, picked up the harmonica as a boy after hearing Sonny Terry, and by fifteen was already working the North East England club circuit (Source: Wikipedia). At twenty he represented Great Britain at the World Harmonica Championships, an experience that led to him meeting and studying under Terry himself, and to early stage time alongside Buddy Guy, Junior Wells and Brownie McGhee (Source: allaboutbluesmusic.com; Wikipedia). Around 1980 Lamb switched to amplified harmonica in the Walter Horton style and, after a decade as a solo player on the British club scene, formed the Blues Burglars with guitarist Johnny Whitehill, recording for the Red Lightnin' label in 1986 (Source: allaboutbluesmusic.com).\n\nLamb moved to London and, building on the Blues Burglars partnership, formed Paul Lamb & The King Snakes, whose eponymous debut appeared on Ace Records around 1990. The classic early-1990s line-up featured Whitehill on guitar alongside Martin Deegan (drums), Chad Strentz (vocals/guitar) and Jim Mercer (bass) (Source: Wikipedia). The band signed to Ace Records and later released a long run of albums through Indigo Records, building a touring schedule that has run to roughly 290 dates a year at its peak (Source: hohner.de).\n\nIn 1994 Lamb reached the UK Singles Chart with \"Harmonica Man,\" recorded under the pseudonym Bravado for Pete Waterman's PWL label — a pop crossover moment for an artist otherwise rooted in traditional electric blues (Source: Wikipedia). He has gone on to work with Mark Knopfler, Rod Stewart, Jimmy Nail and The Who, and has scored music for BBC programmes, film and television commercials (Source: hohner.de; Wikipedia). Today's King Snakes line-up is built around Lamb on harmonica and vocals, his son Ryan Lamb on lead guitar, long-time vocalist/guitarist Chad Strentz, bassist Rod Demick and drummer Mike Thorne — a settled band that continues to tour Europe, Asia and the Middle East, including a scheduled appearance at the Kjøpsvik Blues Festival in Norway in July 2026 (Source: hohner.de; Kjøpsvik Bluesklubb). Guitarist Johnny Whitehill and the 1990s rhythm section of Martin Deegan and Jim Mercer are historical members of the classic-era King Snakes, not part of today's touring band (Source: Wikipedia).

Musical Influence

Paul Lamb stands as one of the last direct links between Sonny Terry's generation of acoustic blues harmonica and the modern British electric blues scene — a player who learned from the source and then spent four decades carrying it forward through relentless touring (Source: hohner.de). His induction into the British Blues Awards Hall of Fame, alongside Peter Green and John Mayall, reflects a career judged less on a single hit and more on unbroken decades of playing (Source: Wikipedia). The band's ability to stay together in a recognisable form for over three decades, now including his own son on lead guitar, has made Paul Lamb & The King Snakes one of the reference points for what a working British blues band looks like.
