Philip John Manning, born in 1948 in Devonport, Tasmania, has been active as a blues singer, guitarist and slide player since 1966, playing across labels including Mushroom, Festival and Polydor (Source: Wikipedia). He is best known as a founding member of Chain, for whom he co-wrote the January 1971 single "Black and Blue," which reached the top 20 on the Australian singles chart; the follow-up "Judgement" reached the top 40, and the album "Toward the Blues" (September 1971) went top 10 (Source: Wikipedia). That year Manning placed third for Best Guitarist in the influential Go-Set Pop Poll (Source: Wikipedia). His solo career began with "I Wish There Was a Way" (1974), and he formed the Manning Keays Band with Jim Keays in 1977-1978, recording a cover of "When a Man Loves a Woman." From the 1980s he leaned into acoustic blues, releasing albums including "It's Blues" (1988), "Can't Stop" (1992) and "Migrants Dance" (2003), while periodically returning to Chain alongside his solo work (Source: Wikipedia). He is an endorsed artist for Fender and Cole Clark guitars (Source: official site).

Musical Influence

As co-writer of Chain's "Black and Blue" and a driving force behind "Toward the Blues," Phil Manning helped define what Australian blues rock could sound like in the early 1970s, and his subsequent decades of acoustic solo work have kept him a respected elder of the scene (Source: Wikipedia).
