Rolf "Roffe" Wikström

• Sweden• Active: 1970–present
Nordic BluesBlues RockVisa/Songwriter

Self-taught after a childhood TV glimpse of Champion Jack Dupree, Roffe Wikström fused blues structure with Swedish poetic lyricism — including sung settings of poet Nils Ferlin — across a career still active in his seventies. After a year off touring in 2025 for back problems, he released the album Ballader och Bröl in April 2026, turning 72, and returned to a smaller run of shows later that year.

Rolf "Roffe" Wikström was born on 5 April 1949 in Stockholm and grew up in modest circumstances near Hammarby IP. His path into the blues began in 1961, when he saw pianist Champion Jack Dupree on Swedish television — a moment that sent him teaching himself guitar on borrowed instruments before he could afford his own Fenton Veil and Levin 325 (Kilde: Wikipedia). He first gained wider recognition in Slim's Blues Gang, led by Per "Slim" Notini, in 1971, having played guitar the year before in The Underground Failures. From 1972 to 1974 he was part of Löpande bandet, a politically engaged song collective aligned with the Swedish progg movement, before forming his own backing band, Rolf Wikströms Hjärtslag, in 1976 — the vehicle for most of his solo career from that point forward. He later played in Blue Hammer from 2002 to 2006 (Kilde: Wikipedia). Wikström's songwriting combined blues structures with poetic Swedish lyricism, at times setting the words of poet Nils Ferlin to music. His albums "Mitt hjärta är ditt" (1989) and "...din längtans blå anemone" (1996) were both commercially successful and drew on this Ferlin connection, work that earned him the Nils Ferlin Society's Troubadour Prize in 1989. He continued releasing new material well into his seventies, with "Ballader och bröl" appearing in 2021 (Kilde: Wikipedia). Alongside his music career, Wikström completed a bachelor's degree in cultural geography, economics and economic history. His body of work has been recognized with the City of Stockholm's Bellman Prize (1995), the Cornelis Vreeswijk Scholarship (2015), and the Guitarpeoples Prize (2018) — honors that reflect his standing as one of the elder statesmen of Swedish blues-rooted songwriting (Kilde: Wikipedia).

Musical Influence

Wikström is one of the few artists to fuse American blues form with the Swedish literary song tradition, giving the poetry of Nils Ferlin a bluesy musical voice and helping establish a distinctly Swedish idiom within blues-rooted songwriting. (Kilde: Wikipedia)
