Samantha Fish started out behind a drum kit, not in front of one — proof, of a sort, that the guitarist who would later headline blues-rock festivals across the world learned rhythm from the inside before she ever learned to solo. She was born on January 30, 1989, in Kansas City, Missouri, where her sister Amanda Fish would also go on to become a singer-songwriter. Samantha switched from drums to guitar at fifteen, raised on Bonnie Raitt and Stevie Ray Vaughan records before discovering Tom Petty and the Rolling Stones — the Stones' "Sticky Fingers" in particular reshaped how she thought about songwriting and tone. As a teenager she became a regular at Kansas City's Knuckleheads Saloon, watching touring blues acts, and once she turned eighteen she started getting invited up onstage with them (Kilde: Wikipedia). A defining moment came just out of high school at the King Biscuit Blues Festival in Helena, Arkansas, where she saw solo performers playing four-string guitars built out of cigar boxes — an instrument she would later adopt as a genuine part of her own rig, buying one built by Stogie Box Blues while playing the 2012 edition of the same festival. In 2019 she went on to lead the New Orleans Cigar Box Guitar Festival, turning a chance discovery into an ongoing advocacy for the format (Kilde: Wikipedia). She self-produced her live debut, "Live Bait," in 2009, and in 2011 released "Runaway" with mentor Mike Zito, signing to the German blues label Ruf Records. In 2012 she won the Blues Music Award for Best New Artist. Over the following decade she released a steady run of albums that moved decisively from straight blues toward a brasher, hook-driven blues-rock sound: "Black Wind Howlin'" (2013), "Wild Heart" (2015), and in 2017 both "Chills & Fever" — a horn-driven detour into vintage soul — and "Belle of the West." In 2019 she moved to Rounder Records for "Kill or Be Kind," followed by "Faster" in 2021 (Kilde: Wikipedia). Her 2023 collaborative album with Texas songwriter Jesse Dayton, "Death Wish Blues," reached number 1 on the Billboard Blues chart and earned her first Grammy nomination, for Best Contemporary Blues Album. "Paper Doll," released in 2025, brought a second Grammy nomination in the same category in 2026 (Kilde: Wikipedia). Across her catalog she has become one of the most visible commercial faces of the new generation of women in blues, winning multiple Independent Blues Awards, Blues Music Awards and OffBeat Magazine honors between 2016 and 2023.
