The Blues Band was a British rhythm-and-blues band formed in London in 1979 by Paul Jones, former lead vocalist and harmonica player of Manfred Mann, and guitarist Tom McGuinness, also formerly of Manfred Mann (Source: Wikipedia). The original lineup was completed by bassist Gary Fletcher, slide guitarist Dave Kelly (previously with the John Dummer Band and a backing musician for Howlin' Wolf and John Lee Hooker), and drummer Hughie Flint, formerly of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and McGuinness Flint (Source: Wikipedia). Their debut release, the self-released "Official Blues Band Bootleg Album" (1980), earned airplay on BBC Radio 1 and led to a contract with Arista Records (Source: Wikipedia). Hughie Flint left in 1982 and was replaced by former Family drummer Rob Townsend (Source: Wikipedia). The band briefly disbanded after a 1983 live recording before reforming in 1986, going on to release more than 30 studio, live and compilation albums over four decades and playing well over 4,000 gigs, including the acoustic-leaning "Wire Less" (1995), recorded at Snape Maltings in Suffolk (Source: Wikipedia). Paul Jones additionally presented BBC Radio 2's "The Blues Show" for 32 years, from 1986 to 2018, becoming one of the most influential blues broadcasters in Britain (Source: Wikipedia). The band undertook a farewell tour and released a final studio album, "So Long" (2022), featuring all five members alongside guest performances from Zoot Money, Albert Lee and Steve Simpson, before disbanding permanently that year; for their last performances, Dave Kelly's son stood in for Townsend (Source: Wikipedia; Repertoire Records). Paul Jones and Dave Kelly have continued performing together as an acoustic duo in the years since (Source: The Stables; Marine Theatre).

Musical Influence

One of Britain's longest-running blues bands, The Blues Band helped keep an authentic R&B/blues sound alive on the UK club circuit for over four decades, while Paul Jones's 32 years presenting BBC Radio 2's "The Blues Show" gave the genre a rare mainstream broadcasting platform in Britain (Source: Wikipedia).
