The Freaky Buds formed in Nantes in 2018 around guitarist-singer Maxime Genouel, drummer Hugo Deviers and harmonica player Thomas Troussier, joined months later by a second guitarist known as Lonj (Source: mazik.info). Based between Nantes and Bordeaux, the band's music is firmly rooted in roots blues, with a heavy Hill Country and swamp blues influence and the groove and energy of live performance placed front and centre; they draw on Howlin' Wolf, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters and R.L. Burnside while folding in contemporary touches reminiscent of The Black Keys or Royal Blood (Source: mazik.info). Their well-received 2022 debut, "Hard Days, Fuzzy Nights," was followed on 17 October 2025 by "Western Smoke" on Freak Land Records/Inouïe Distribution — recorded and produced by Kid Andersen at his renowned Greaseland Studio, a session the band describes as a fervent, authentic and intensely alive blues record (Source: mazik.info; paris-move.com).

Musical Influence

By working without a bassist and leaning hard into Hill Country and swamp blues, The Freaky Buds represent one of the more traditionalist, roots-focused strands of the younger French blues generation, while still speaking to modern rock audiences (Source: mazik.info).
