Tim Lothar

• Denmark• Active: 1981 (as drummer), 2006-present (as bluesman)

Ex-drummer turned Danish acoustic bluesman - Frederikshavn songster, German Blues Award honoree.

Tim Lothar Petersen spent twenty-five years as a drummer before he ever picked up a guitar — and then built one of Denmark's most internationally decorated solo blues careers almost entirely from that late start. Based in his hometown of Frederikshavn, Denmark, he taught himself acoustic guitar to explore classic American Delta blues after a quarter-century behind a drum kit, developing into the singer-songwriter and storyteller billed today as a "songster and traveling bluesman" (Kilde: timlothar.com; blues.gr). His 2006 debut, Cut to the Bone, drew enthusiastic reviews at home and abroad, and its 2008 follow-up, In It for the Ride, won Best Danish Blues Album at the Danish Music Awards, with Lothar also named Blues Artist of the Year later that year (Kilde: paris-move.com). He represented Denmark at the European Blues Challenge in 2011, and his international profile has grown steadily since — Blues Finland has called him "unquestionably the most influential blues artist in the Nordic countries" (Kilde: timlothar.com press materials). He won the International Award of Honour at the German Blues Award in 2014 and was a finalist in the International Songwriting Competition in 2012 (Kilde: timlothar.com). His catalogue since has run through Blues from the North (2016, with Holger "HoBo" Daub), Robert Johnson Was Here (2017), Traveling Blues Nights (2017), Walk Right In and More Stories (both 2018), the single Lonesome Covid Blues, Old Cinema Session (2020), Neu Darchau (2022), Live at Blues Baltica (2024) and Crossing Borders (2026) (Kilde: timlothar.com).

Musical Influence

Lothar's significance lies in proving a late-blooming, self-taught path can still reach the top of European blues — from a quarter-century as a drummer to a Danish Music Award, German Blues Award honour, and a reputation, per Blues Finland, as the most influential blues artist in the Nordic countries, built entirely on solo acoustic storytelling rather than a backing band (Kilde: timlothar.com).
